Polymarket Greenland odds: will the US acquire Greenland? What Polymarket and Kalshi say
Traders put the chance of a US purchase of Greenland before 2027 at under 3%, even after the September 2026 US–Denmark–Greenland security deal. The live odds, the year’s timeline, why the deal does not count, and how these markets settle.
Prediction markets give the United States under a 3% chance of acquiring Greenland before 2027. On Polymarket, "Will Trump acquire Greenland before 2027?" trades at about 2.4%, and Kalshi's "Will Trump buy at least part of Greenland? Before 2027" at about 2.7%. Over the whole of Trump's term, to January 2029, Kalshi traders give it about 16%.
Those numbers held even after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a new security agreement in September 2026, because that agreement expands the US military presence without transferring any territory.
Prices as of 21 October 2026.

The 2026 Greenland timeline
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Around 17 January | Trump announces a 10% tariff on Denmark, the UK and six other European countries from 1 February, rising to 25% in June, "until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland" |
| 21 January | At Davos, Trump rules out using military force; after meeting NATO's Mark Rutte he announces the "framework of a future deal" and drops the tariff threat |
| Spring–summer | Trilateral talks between the US, Denmark and Greenland |
| 22 September | The three sign a security agreement updating the 1951 Defense of Greenland agreement |
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said throughout that Greenland's sovereignty was not up for negotiation.
Why the security deal does not resolve "acquire"
The September 2026 agreement lets the US expand its military presence in Greenland and gives Washington a say over military presence by non-NATO countries and certain investments from outside the EU and NATO. It has no end date, and it would keep applying if Greenland became independent.
What it does not do is transfer sovereignty over any land to the United States. Acquisition markets are written around a transfer of territory, which is why prices barely moved. This is a good example of why you read the rules, not just the title: a big headline can leave a market untouched if it does not meet the resolution criteria (how markets resolve).
What would move these markets
- A sale or transfer of any part of Greenland to the US, the only path to "Yes" in the acquisition markets.
- A Greenland independence process, which the island's government has discussed for years but not scheduled.
- Renewed pressure from Washington, such as tariffs or new demands, which pushed prices up in January.
- Time. With about ten weeks left in 2026, each quiet week pulls the before-2027 markets toward zero; the 2029 market keeps more value because there is more time.
How to think about a 2% market
At 2.4¢ a "Yes" share pays about 40 to 1 if it happens. Buying "No" at about 97.6¢ earns about 2.5% in ten weeks if nothing happens, a decent annualised return, but you risk the whole stake on a shock. Neither side is free money; work out your own probability first (how to calculate expected value).
Long-shot markets also tend to be slightly overpriced, because some traders pay up for lottery-ticket payoffs. That bias is one reason careful traders look at the No side of very unlikely events (are prediction markets accurate?).
